A Deeper Essence is the first song with music written entirely by Daniele.
When we started working on new stuff, after Enuma, he came with this riff; at the very beginning it was really thrashy, it really sounded like a Megadeth riff. We used to tease him a lot for this, but we started playing it.
After some tests we fitted it in our style, but Daniele didn't liked that it came out too slow (a doom song, after all). It was the moment when we said "ok, there's no need to play it slowly. who says we have to play all songs at the same speed ?". I'm quite sure that playing doom metal is not only about slow and down tuned riffs; a great part in the mood is being obsessive and, somehow, hypnotic. So we stressed this feeling and,basically, there's only one riff in the whole song. I remember that some of us (me or Silvio) said: who cares if it's only one riff, even Quintessence by Darkthrone is only one riff and it's a kick-ass tune. So we started calling di song "essence".
When I wrote the lyrics, I was reading some qabbalah and other old jewish myths. I just wanted to write a song about the cruelty of god, I'm still astonished that people can worship such a bastard being. I wanted to tell that god is evil (he hates us all, as Slayer said) and he's delighted by this. Hence the continuous repeat of his name (that's a real mystic jewish ritual), the tetragrammaton. Hence even the reverse that has a very strong and -let's say- "against god" effect in that tradition.
